Waking up to a constable holding a gun to your face
David Jones woke up to two constables and one Somerset police officer holding a gun to his face. It was 4 a.m.
Minutes earlier, Constable Michael Wallace, Constable Gary Baldock, and the police officer entered their apartment without knocking. They had an arrest warrant, but they got the wrong guy.
So why did David Jones and his friend end up getting arrested?
No-knock Warrants in Kentucky
The search warrant Constable Michael Wallace obtained from a judge was technically not a no-knock warrant. However, the effect was the same. The constables quietly slipped into Jones’ apartment without announcing themselves.
Recently, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear signed a bill into law limiting the use of no-knock warrants. The bill was introduced after the death of Breonna Taylor, who was shot and killed in her own home.
It took a public outcry demanding change for the no-knock law to pass. So, what will it take to curb the power of the constable? Kentucky State Representative Adam Koenig explains how he’s trying to limit the role of the constable in Kentucky.
